I have regular cable and I want to buy an HDTV but I need to know if I have to subscribe to hdcable in order to get the best of it, or can I buy something that will upgrade my picture?
With just your existing cable subscription, you should be able to pick up your local broadcast stations in HD. Usually this includes ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, etc. These will show up as “7.1″, where “7″ was your normal, non-HD channel (7 is ABC for me, so 7.1 is ABC-HD.)
However, if you want things like Discovery-HD and other HD channels, you’ll need to upgrade your cable subscription to include HD.
As for the switchover in 2009, the previous poster is incorrect one two counts:
First, ONLY those using an over-air antenna (bunny ears, etc.) will be affected. Cable and satellite users will be unaffected by the switchover.
Second, the switchover is from analog to digital. While all HD channels ARE digital, not all digital channels are HD. For instance, ABC broadcasts a sort of mini-news channel that displays local traffic and weather conditions, along with other information. For me, this is channel 7.2. While this channel IS digital, it is NOT in HD.
When the switchover occurs in 2009, all that will happen is all existing non-HD channels that are broadcasting in analog will now broadcast in digital. They’ll still be non-HD.
Not really. If you need the cable channels, then yes. However, if you are going to stick to the default antenna channels, buy an HD tuner, or hook up your antenna to your TV (which might have it built in) and it will automatically receive the HD channels with the HD resolution.
yes you have to have the premium hd channels through your sattelite or cable company. BUT…not for lonng because starting in 2009 all channels will be broadcast in hd and thus regualr non hd tv will need a specific converter box.
You don’t REALLY have to buy HD cable services, but the Low Def Signal on Cable is kinda noisy…
You could switch to Satellite and your Low Def signals will have LESS NOISE…
OR if you can get it….Get the Fiber Optic cable to your home….the LOW Def signal is so clean you get NO NOISE with that system….
I don’t know if you have FIOS in your neighborhood.

to my knowledge their is nothing on the market (yet) that upconverts basic cable to HD so if you want the most out of your HDTV get HDcable
